Congratulations on your new tattoo! Let's talk about proper aftercare to ensure your tattoo heals beautifully.
Please follow these steps carefully:
Day one: Initial Care
Leave the clear breathable tattoo bandage a minimum of 4 days to shield your fresh ink from bacteria and other contaminants. If you can make it to 7days with it even better!
No Swimming or Soaking: DO NOT submerge your tattoo underwater in the ocean, pool, hot tubs, ice bath or expose it to extreme heat or direct sunlight for at least two weeks. Submerging your tattoo may cause the ink be pulled out of the skin, fade, and or blur out. It also increases your chance of an infection, no one wants that! :(
During the next 4 days your bandage will begin to collect plasma, blood, and ink within the pocket. It will look funky but please do not be alarmed or grossed out, it is your beautiful bodies way of healing itself. A totally normal part of the healing process.
*If your Derma-shield bandage does come off within the first hour or day please resume with tradition tattoo aftercare (with clear cellophane wrap).
Please refrain from activities that will cause you to sweat profusely such as the sauna, heavy gym exercise, or cardio/aerobics. You don't want to encourage your body to sweat out your fresh ink.
Avoid Tight Clothing: Wear loose, breathable clothing over your tattoo during the healing process to prevent irritation.
If your bed sheets are white or a light color, I recommend laying down a towel in the frequent contact area. Your tattoo will shed and has the probability of permanently staining fabric as it continues to heal.
Day four/seven: remove your bandage
Starting from the bottom of your bandage, slowly begin to pull in a downward motion allowing the collected plasma and blood to spill out. I highly recommend doing this in the shower under lukewarm water.
Take your time removing your bandage. Do not pull it off forcefully.
Keep your tattoo clean
1. Clean the Tattoo
Once the bandage is off, wash your hands thoroughly. Then, gently cleanse the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Use your fingertips to clean the area in a gentle circular motion. Air dry or pat dry with a clean paper towel. DO NOT attempt to aggressively rub any remaining residue from your bandage! Your body will naturally shed, please be patient and keep the area clean.
2. Moisturizing
3. Healing Process
Avoid Rebandaging : Do not reapply a bandage after the initial one is removed. Your tattoo needs to breathe to heal properly.
NO Scratching or Picking: As your tattoo heals, it may scab or flake. Do NOT scratch, pick, or peel these scabs, as it can lead to ink loss and scarring. :(
Stay Clean: Continue to gently clean your tattoo daily with mild soap and lukewarm water. Pat dry and apply lotion as needed.
4. Protection
Avoid Sun Exposure: Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight for at least 2-3 weeks. After it’s fully healed, always apply sunscreen with a high broad spectrum SPF to protect your tattoo from fading.
No Swimming or Soaking: Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and baths for at least two weeks. Submerging your tattoo can cause infection or fading.
Avoid Tight Clothing: Wear loose, breathable clothing over your tattoo during the healing process to prevent irritation.
5. Signs of Infection
Monitor the Area: It’s normal for your tattoo to be red, swollen, or tender for the first few days. However, if you notice excessive redness, swelling, pus, or a foul odor, contact your artist or a healthcare professional immediately as these could be signs of infection.
6. Long-Term Care
Keep it Moisturized: Even after your tattoo has healed, keep the skin hydrated to maintain the vibrancy of the ink.
Sun Protection: Always apply sunscreen to your tattoo when exposed to the sun, as UV rays can cause fading over time.
By following these aftercare instructions, you’ll help your tattoo heal properly and looks amazing for years to come. If you have any questions or concerns during the healing process, don’t hesitate to reach out to me or your tattoo artist for advice.
