Congratulations on your new tattoo! Let's talk about proper aftercare to ensure your tattoo heals beautifully.
Please follow these steps carefully:
Day one: Initial Care
Leave the clear breathable tattoo bandage a minimum of 4 days to shield your fresh ink from bacteria and other contaminants.
During the next 4 days your bandage will begin to collect plasma, blood, and ink within the pocket. It will look funky but please do not be alarmed or grossed out, this is your bodies natural way of healing itself. A totally normal part of the healing process.
The bandage is waterproof, you may shower as usual. :) Just no scrubbing!
DO NOT submerge your tattoo underwater for a minimum of two weeks, in the ocean, pool, hot tub, ice bath or expose it to extreme heat or direct sunlight for at least two weeks.
Submerging your tattoo may cause the ink be pulled out of the skin, fade, and or blur out. It also increases your chance of an infection, no one wants that! :(
Please refrain from activities that will cause you to sweat profusely such as the sauna, heavy gym exercise, or cardio/aerobics. You don't want to encourage your body to sweat out your fresh ink.
Avoid Tight Clothing that may cause direct friction between your tattoo. Example: yoga pants, elastic from bra, socks, etc. Be mindful and wear loose, breathable clothing over your tattoo during the healing process to prevent irritation.
If your bed sheets are white or a light color, I recommend laying down a clean towel in the frequent contact area. Your tattoo will shed and has the probability of permanently staining fabric as it continues to heal.
NOTE: If you notice any signs of irritation from the bandage itself such as redness or itching. Remove the bandage immediately and continue to wash your tattoo keeping it clean and hydrated. You know your body better than anyone else, listen to it. ♡
Day three/four: remove your bandage
I highly recommend removing your bandage under warm/hot water. With an open flat palm gently massage the top of your bandage to encourge the adhesive to lossen. From the bottom of your bandage, slowly begin to pull in a downward motion allowing the collected plasma and blood to spill out. Take your time removing your bandage, do not pull it off forcefully. Be gentel with your fresh tattoo.
Keep your tattoo clean
1. Clean the Tattoo
Once the bandage is off, wash your hands thoroughly. Then, gently cleanse the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free and dye-free antibacterial soap. Use your fingertips to gently clean the area in a soft circular motion. Air dry or pat dry with a clean paper towel. DO NOT attempt to aggressively rub any remaining residue from your bandage! Your body will naturally shed, please be patient and keep the area clean.
Keep Pets Away Avoid allowing pets near your fresh tattoo during the healing process. Pets can carry bacteria and dander that may increase the risk of infection. If you share your bed with a pet, it’s crucial to avoid doing so while your tattoo is healing. Even with clean sheets, pet fur and dander can transfer to the tattooed area, causing irritation or infection. Prioritize a clean, pet-free environment to ensure proper healing.
2. Moisturizing
3. Avoid Rebandaging
Do not reapply a bandage after the initial one is removed. Your tattoo needs to breathe.
NO Scratching or Picking: As your tattoo heals, it may scab or flake. Do NOT scratch, pick, or peel these scabs, as it can lead to ink loss and scarring. :(
Stay Clean: Continue to gently clean your tattoo daily with mild soap and lukewarm water. Pat dry and apply lotion as needed.
4. Protection
Avoid Sun Exposure: Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight for at least 2-3 weeks. After it’s fully healed, always apply sunscreen with a high broad spectrum SPF to protect your tattoo from fading.
No Swimming or Soaking: Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, and baths for at least two weeks. Submerging your tattoo can cause infection or fading.
Avoid Tight Clothing: Wear loose, breathable clothing over your tattoo during the healing process to prevent irritation.
5. Signs of Infection
Monitor the Area: It’s normal for your tattoo to be red, swollen, or tender for the first few days. However, if you notice excessive redness, swelling, pus, or a foul odor, contact your artist or a healthcare professional immediately as these could be signs of infection.
6. Long-Term Care
Keep it Moisturized: Even after your tattoo has healed, keep the skin hydrated to maintain the vibrancy of the ink.
Sun Protection: Always apply sunscreen to your tattoo when exposed to the sun, as UV rays can cause fading over time.
By following these aftercare instructions, you’ll help your tattoo heal properly and looks amazing for years to come. If you have any questions or concerns during the healing process, don’t hesitate to reach out to me or your tattoo artist for advice.
